The Museum Walserhaus is first and foremost a museum of the language that illustrates the High Alemannic Ggurijnartitsch spoken by the villagers. In the information boxes in each room, stories and explanations can be heard in this language and the old names of the exhibited objects can be discovered.
Together with the other southern Walser dialects, Ggurijnartitsch is an extremely interesting vernacular because, due to its long geographic and linguistic isolation, it has retained many characteristics of the Old High German and Middle High German period. In addition to this, it has also “created” absolutely unique words. With publications and various initiatives, the Walserhaus Gurin Association is working to continue the work of linguist Emily Gerstner-Hirzel, who has systematically collected Ggurijnartitsch words and expressions for more than 30 years.
